What Does Copyleft Mean ?
Copyleft protects the information that is available freely for users in a way where it is not distributed without the author’s permission. |
Copyleft allows everyone to use the information but it is meant for individual or personal use. A person may not have the complete rights to distribute it. However, they can modify the original work.
Copyleft means all kinds of documents like photographs, software are, written documents put up by various people can be accessed, read, printed, saved and distributed in the way the user wants to. However, the restriction is applied when new scope of work is created from it.
In case a person wants to modify the work and distribute it they must give the attribution to the original creators of the work, and also they must retain the modified work in the same licensing agreement. So, even the byproducts of the original content must contain reference to the original by keeping the same license.
A copyleft agreement gives a lot of freedom to the user but within a framework. For example, someone else cannot take the information and call it theirs. The information or program is mainly meant to be shared. In case a person takes it or reproduces it without following rules, then that amounts to theft. Before you plan to use a document, it is always best to read the license agreement and see if it is copyright or copyleft and also read the distribution terms in case it is a copyleft document so that you know how to deal with it.
