Creative Commons Versus Copyright

Creative commons is located in San Francisco, and it is a non profit organization. The organization is mainly involved in releasing copyright licenses to protect people’s creative information.

These licenses are called creative common licenses. It is usually available free to the public. The licenses let the people know their original right on their work and how to protect their information on the Internet. Also, the creative common licenses let the original owner know what rights they can waive for the benefit of the recipients. One of the most popular services that use this license is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an open source directory of information where people can contribute, and also share their knowledge.

Creative commons is one of the pioneers to have started the copyleft concept. Copyleft is quite different from copyright. Copyleft allows people to use and distribute the information or material. It mainly keeps in mind the benefits to the overall internet community. Also, a person who is using the copyleft information should give the same amount of freedom for the information or material that has been redistributed or reproduced.

On the other hand, copyright authorizes only the owner of the document to distribute and change the original piece of work. It does not allow any other type of redistribution of the material. There is no benefit extended to any other party than the owner through copyright. The laws are stricter.

A person, who wants to keep the original document and has no intention of redistributing, will use copyright. However, people who are looking to share information and also let more people use it they can use creative common licenses.
