File sharing is one of the most common methods that is being used by people to share music and video files.

File sharing mainly takes place through file sharing servers. Some of the most common file sharing websites are Napster, Torrent and eDonkey.File sharing practice creates an ethical grey area for copyright infringement. There are several cases of copyright infringement today, and one of the main causes is file sharing. One of the most popular cases that is being fought is by American Association of Recording Artists with Napster. Napster has caused several copyright infringement cases by allowing people to openly share music files with each other.

File sharing by itself is not illegal. File sharing has been taking place right from the days since the computer first made its presence felt. People have shared computer based files and digital media using various methods like storage devices and the Internet. People share files using emails and chat software too. However, if a person or a computer is sharing copyrighted information with others using a network, it is illegal.

People can share several files like music and movies illegally. However, the platform that is enabling it is the file sharing servers. A file sharing server is not directly sharing the movie or the music file. However, two individual computers are doing it. Also, a file sharing server cannot impose instructions on a specific type of file that is being shared. It acts as an open source which enables people to share information. That is why file sharing cannot be termed as illegal concept.
