Who Was The First Woman To Receive A Patent ?



Mary Kies is the first woman to have received a patent in the United States. Before the United States Patent Act, which was declared in 1790, only men were entitled to receive patents.

After a federal law was passed, even women were entitled to file for patents. Initially only a few states allowed women to file for patents.Previously, along with women, even African Americans were not allowed to have patents. Mary Kies was given a patent for weaving straw with silk or thread. However, people were so angered by the Act that the patent was destroyed and also they set fire to the patent office in 1836. Also the original copy or duplicate of the patent is not available anymore.

Mary Kies invention had actually given a boost to the US hat-making industry, and she has been credited for it. The early decades in the United States were formative and several people were from different nationalities. There was not much unity among people, and there was a lot of inequality in the society. There was racism and then there was inequality among genders. Men were always treated as superior and held all rights in various aspects of life. However, a woman had very minimal rights and among the English people, women’s responsibilities were limited to the running of household. At such a time Mary Kies was one of the first woman to file for a patent and also receive it. Her idea was unique and also only of its kind.
