Federal Guidelines For Telemarketing Fraud

It is a known fact that when a person sends money to someone he or she does not know or gives out his or her financial information on the telephone to telemarketers, the person's chances of being a victim of telemarketing fraud increase.

And once the fraud occurs, it becomes very difficult to get back the money unless the person is taken to court.

The Federal Trade Commission has laid down rules for telemarketing and everyone should know these federal guidelines for telemarketing fraud.

Federal Guidelines for Telemarketing Fraud:

  • Never buy anything from a company that is unfamiliar to you. A legitimate company would be more than happy to supply with details about its business and company information over the phone when you ask for it.
  • When you receive a call, do not jump to take the offer. Instead ask the caller to send you written material about the offer.
  • If you are planning to purchasing something expensive based on a brochure, make sure you get the offer whetted by someone who has keen financial sense because not everything written down could be true.
  • If you have never heard of a company, make sure you first check it out with your local consumer protection agency, Better Business Bureau, National Fraud Information Center or any other company watchdog group.
  • When talking to a telemarketer, make sure you get the person's name, designation, telephone number, business address and business license number before doing any transaction. Make sure you verify these details before completing the transaction.
  • If you are giving money to a charity over the telephone, find out what percentage would go to the charity itself. This will give you an indication whether the solicitation for charity is genuine or not.
  • Do not pay for any services in advance. Avoid paying a company that sends a messenger to your house to collect payment.
  • Do not allow yourself to be pressurized by the telemarketer to make any purchases. No legitimate company would do this.
  • Never give out your social security number, credit card number and expiration date, date of birth or bank account number to a person you do not know or an unfamiliar company.
  • If you have any information about telemarketing fraud or any other fraud, make sure you report it to the federal law enforcement agency or local police.
