Benzene, a chemical liquid, is highly inflammable. It is organic. It smells sweet and has no specific color but turns light shade of yellow at normal room temperature. It quickly evaporates in air but the vapors are heavier. It is slightly soluble in water and usually floats on top. It causes cancer and anemia on exposure to various levels of it.
Benzene is present in nearly all everyday items. Benzene is utilized to create other chemicals which produce resins, plastics, nylon and other synthetic fibers. Smaller quantities of the chemical can be traced in production of adhesives, glues, rubber, some lubricants, dyes, detergents, paints, pesticides, drugs, asphalts, charcoal lighter fuel, contact cement, kerosene, cigarette lighter fluids, hydraulic fluid, lacquer thinners, vinyl thinners, inks, processing films, ink marker, and other solvents.
Benzene occurs naturally too. Forest fires and volcanoes are some natural resources of the compound. It is also an ingredient of crude oil, cigarette smoke and gasoline. The air we breathe also contains lower benzene levels as a result of industrial and vehicular emissions. The air contained within the house and in other confined spaces usually includes elevated levels of the chemical because of the everyday products which contain benzene like furniture polishes and varnishes, detergents and adhesives. Some drinks and foods contain benzene too. Recently, benzene was detected in trace quantities in soft drinks. If it stays within the allowed limit, it is permitted.
Benzene is concentrated in areas like gas stations waste sites, petrochemical plants, and compost heaps. The air around these areas contains pretty high levels of the toxic chemical and those exposed to it can be harmed. Benzene also leaches into the earth surface and travels through the layers of water and soil and contaminated the water supply in deep wells.
