Reasons For Age Discrimination

In professional establishments, age discrimination is a term that crops up frequently amongst potential candidates and present employees, especially those falling in the older age bracket.

Age discrimination is definitely prevalent in terms that it is generally difficult for people above the age of 40 to procure a job or obtain promotions, despite their professional worth. However, having said that, it is also important to understand that the term age discrimination has probably been hyped, and there may be a possibility of not procuring a job or promotion due to other reasons as well such as a poorly written resume, an unappealing personality, inadequate interview handling skills and over qualification for the profile.

Although it is well known that today science has increased the lifespan of a human being, this aspect seems to be overlooked by many professional set ups. Many companies feel that the cost of training an older employee may not be recovered in the relatively shorter time span of services offered by him or her in comparison to recruitment of a younger candidate. Keeping the future profits in mind, companies refrain from picking up older employees.

In general, with age increases the professional experience of an individual and with experience the salary expectation increases. Most companies find older candidates over priced and in times of slow economic growth, obviously do not desire to have them on roll. A company may find the prospect of employing two lesser experienced candidates at half the pay package each a profitable bargain as against an older, more experienced candidate demanding double the price. Therefore, in a holistic point of view, despite the qualifications and experience, an older person may not be considered worthy enough.

Also, many associate youth with energy, dynamism and radical line of thought. Companies look out for younger employees to enforce a positive attitude in their work places. Those propagating this view point disregard the years of experience of the older lot; instead interpret old age as lack of enthusiasm, conservative approach in work and resistance to change.

Certain genuine problems on part of the older age group lead to age discrimination as well. At times, lack of knowledge of the latest technology also goes against this age group. Newer trends of working demand familiarity with the modern technical know-how. Also, some individuals over the age of 40 are unable to share a good professional relationship with the younger employees. Such discomfort leads to resistance towards employing older candidates on part of many companies.
