Car Pollution Facts

The US is considered to be the biggest market for cars. It is quite normal for each household in the US to have two cars. However, little do the households know how much they are contributing to car pollution?

Here are some car pollution facts that are rather startling:

  • According to a report by the Environmental Defense Fund, average households with two sedans will emit an average of over 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. Sport utility vehicles (SUV) are estimated to emit as much as 40 percent higher than medium-sized cars. The amount of pollution can stay in the atmosphere for over 100 years, risking the future generations to the potentially dangerous effects of global warming.
  • Vehicular traffic, that primarily includes cars, contributes to about 34 percent of the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and about the same percentage of nitrogen oxide in the environment. Both these air pollutants are contributing factors to the production of smog. Moreover, they affect plant life adversely and also cause respiratory disorders in humans.
  • Cars along with other vehicular traffic contribute to about 51 percent of the carbon monoxide and 31 percent of carbon dioxide in the air. These are harmful pollutants because carbon monoxide contributes to the smog problem, and it is a potentially dangerous pollutant in high concentrations. High concentration of carbon dioxide on the other hand, contributes to greenhouse effect.
  • According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), pollutants contributed by driving a car causes ground-level ozone or smog, which adversely affect the human lungs. Further, it can aggravate or even complicate medical conditions like asthma and other types of lung disease in people suffering from it.
  • Overspill or overflow of gasoline, dirt, brake dust, deposited vehicle exhaust, road particles, automotive fluids, and deicing chemicals from roadways and parking lots contribute to water pollution. This overspill is estimated to be in hundreds and thousands of tons per year. A survey undertaken in 1996, on 693,905 river miles, estimated that urban runoff or overspill was the leading source of destruction for 13 percent of the river miles that were destroyed.

Effects-Of-Air-Pollution-In-Humans      Air pollution can adversely affect human health. Certain segments of population, like the elderly people, infants and children, are likely to be more sensitive to air pollution. Further, certain health concerns like asthma and other respiratory disorders and/or cardiovascular diseases may get aggravated in a person already suffering from them, if they are exposed to pollutants present in the air.
