Main Types Of Pollution
Thanks to industrialization, we now have many different types of pollution. However, even here we can categorize pollution as those that are affecting the Earth worse than others. |
The main types of pollution are as follows
Air pollution: It is caused due to the release of chemicals and particulates by industrial units, motor vehicles and other sources into the atmosphere. Common air pollutants released by the industrial units, factories, motor vehicles include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides. The industrial units that are major sources of air pollution are chemical factories, coal-fired power plants, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, nuclear waste disposal activity, incinerators, large livestock farms (dairy cows, pigs, poultry, etc.), PVC factories, metals production factories, plastics factories, and other heavy industry. Air pollution adversely affects humans by causing cardio-respiratory problems among other health problems.
Water pollution: It is caused due to the release of waste by-products, chemicals and other contaminants into the water sources such as ponds, lakes, rivers, seas and oceans. The other major water contaminant is oil spills in the oceans, as a result of a leakage or accident to the ship carrying it. This adversely affects the humans and marine/aquatic life.
Noise pollution: It is the pollution caused due to the noise from vehicular traffic, industrial units and air-bore traffic including airplanes, Supersonic planes and jets and fighter plane. This affects the humans adversely, causing health issues like neurological disorders, hypertension and hearing loss.
Soil pollution/Land pollution: It is caused due to seepage of chemicals and fertilizers, used excessively to prevent the crops from pests, into the soil. It can also occur from underground leakage. Soil can also become polluted from dangerous materials such as heavy metals and landfills. This affects the humans indirectly as some of the pollutants can make their way into a water body.
