What Is Noise Pollution ?

Noise pollution or sound pollution takes place when people and  living organisms are exposed to high levels of sound that are displeasing, stressful, or destructive to the ears.

Generally, sounds are considered noise pollution if they adversely affect wildlife, human activity, or are capable of damaging physical structures on a regular and repeated basis.Due to industrialization and rampant commercialization, noise pollution has become ominous. The prevailing sources of artificial noise pollution are from transportation and noise from industrial units. The noise from factories is supposed to be a major reason for loss of hearing ability in most workers and people in the surrounding areas. In cities and town, vehicular traffic noise and even entertainment noise can cause several disorders like sleep disruption in humans and animals, loss of hearing, stress related disorders, cardiovascular disorders and in severe cases even mental instability. Those residing close to airports or railway lines are also likely to suffer from the above.

Noise pollution is estimated to be one of the most pervasive pollution in America.

None of the developed nations has a dedicated agency that regulates noise pollution, although they have agencies for the protection of environment. Although, the US has passed two noise control bills, much more needs to be done on this front.

In many developed regions of the world like the United States, Canada and Europe, different agencies manage different types of noises. For example, the transportation ministry is responsible to regulate noise due to transportation; the health ministry regulates health-related work noise and noise due to entertainment related events such as loud music, which is a criminal offense in many areas.
