One of the most inhuman actions is the subjection of an innocent and helpless soul to abuse. Child abuse is bifurcated into the four categories of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Each state in the US has its own demarked definition and illustration of the term 'child neglect'. The rules pertaining to the same also vary in accordance to the state in which the incident has occurred.
However, in a nutshell one can say that any act on behalf of the parent to deprive the child from any fundamental need that could hamper his or her physical, intellectual, emotional and psychological parameters of healthy development; render the parent guilty of child neglect. While evaluating child neglect, it is pertinent to give consideration to the cultural and financial factors associated with the specific family.
Neglect is broadly categorized into physical, educational and emotional forms of neglect. Examples of physical neglect include desertion or rejection of a child, asking a child to leave home premises, not permitting a runaway child to return back home, denying or delaying medical assistance to the child and not providing the child with proper clothing, food and supervision.
Educational neglect can be observed in circumstances of constant absenteeism from school, not enrolling a child into school at the proper age and unfulfilling the basic educational needs of the child.
Actions illustrating emotional neglect comprise of lack of proper love and care towards the child, spouse abuse in the presence of the child and granting the child permission to substance abuse.
Dental neglect is another category of neglect involving failure of providing adequate treatment for dental cavities, gum diseases and other oral problems.
