Three in ten of the country’s homeless are former foster care children. A recent study has found that within eighteen months of leaving foster care, twenty-seven percent of the males and ten percent of the females had been incarcerated. Thirty-three percent were receiving public assistance, thirty-seven percent had not finished high school and fifty percent were unemployed.
The American national foster care statistics show children who experience child abuse and neglect are fifty-nine percent more likely to be arrested as juveniles, twenty-eight percent more likely to be arrested as adults, and thirty percent more likely to commit a violent crime. Annually, six hundred teenage foster children turn eighteen, and are forced to leave the foster care. Eighteen years is the maximum age limit for the facility with limited support
It is estimated that, nationally, a foster youth changes placements about once every six months. On average, only seven to thirteen percent of foster youth enroll in higher education among which only one percent former foster children earn a college degree.
According to the most recent report from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), approximately 794,000 children were found to be victims of child abuse or neglect in calendar year 2007. Of this number, 59 percent suffered neglect, 10.8 eight percent were physically abused, 7.6 percent were sexually abused, 4.2 percent were emotionally or psychologically maltreated, and less than one percent was medically neglected. In addition, 13.1 percent of victims experienced "other" types of maltreatment such as abandonment, threats of harm, and drug addiction at birth because the mother was an addict.
