Reckless driving is a serious offense that comes under moving vehicle violation. Usually when a person drives recklessly, it results in an accident and/or causes damage to property. Why a person drives recklessly is still a mystery that psychologists are trying to solve but certain causes have been identified.

The effect of reckless driving no doubt is loss of lives. According to statistics from the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety, an estimated 1,500 people are killed or seriously injured each year due to reckless driving.
One often overlooked effect of reckless driving is the killing of animals like dogs and cats. Invariably these poor animals are mown down with no regard for their lives. Of course when there is damage to government property due to reckless driving like a person crashing into electric poles, the sufferers are ordinary people. One cannot disregard the loss of lives that occur due to this offense. It basically is an utter waste of life when a person is killed due to reckless driving.

- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Passengers egging the driver to drive in a reckless manner. Often this is referred to as peer pressure.
- One of the most common causes of reckless driving is road rage where one driver is often out to be one up on another driver or drivers.
